This week at LWN: RawTherapee: the newest open source raw photo editor

Gábor Horváth has been developing the raw photo converter RawTherapee single-handedly, on Linux and Windows, since 2006. The application has been freeware the entire time, with Horváth accepting Paypal donations through the project’s web site. Consequently, although there are significant changes in the 3.0 alpha release announced on January 4th, it was arguably bigger news that the project was switching to the GPLv3.

XBPS 0.4

XBPS is a binary package system designed and implemented from scratch. The XBPS code tries to be portable as possible. Packages are built in a chroot. This is mostly to avoid polluting the host system with unwanted build dependencies. It also helps you build multiple package sets for a different libc, and lets you build packages in any GNU/Linux distribution. Multiple binary package repositories are supported. The first repository that contains the package (or the newest version) wins. A plist file can be edited to override the order as well. Repositories can be accessed locally (in a directory) or remotely via HTTP, FTP, or HTTPS. Package information can be fetched from remote repositories on demand without having to download a large file in advance. SHA256 integrity checks are used for source distribution files, binary package files, and installed package files. Multiple compression methods are supported for binary packages, including bzip2, gzip, and xz.

Changes: Major stability and performance changes were made.
